Emerald

Emerald, called as the king of precious stones, is next to ruby and sapphire, one of the most valuable and most desirable colored stones on earth. It is a variety of beryllium from the silicate family, and its name comes from the Greek word “smaragdos”, meaning green stone.

The oldest emerald mines in the Red Sea region, were referred to as the Cleopatra Mines, because her jewelry was often decorated with this green gemstone, and supposedly she had a special affection for it. The most valuable and the rarest, and therefore the most desirable, is the ruby pigeon blood, which is red with a delicate blue shine, and usually comes from Burma. However, the value of a ruby is influenced not only by its color, but also by its transparency. One of the main features of ruby stone are numerous inclusions trapped inside, which testify to their uniqueness, naturalness, and often also the place of origin.

On the jewelry market, stones with a vivid color and high transparency are the most valued, but in the case of this stone, it often happens that inclusions increase the value of the stone, thanks to other mineral fragments, that reflect the light and create a star effect. The price of a ruby is also influenced by its luster, which is most often obtained by a faceted cut.

 This red gemstone is additionally featured by the phenomenon of pleochroism, i.e. color changes depending on the angle of incidence of light, while in ultraviolet light – it often shows luminescence.
